History of the Chobaniuks

Given the url of this site I thought it would be good to cover the origins of my last name and how my ancestors came to Canada.

The name “Chobaniuk” originates in the Bukovina region of Ukraine and Romania. My Great Grandfather, Paul Chobaniuk, came to Canada in the early 20th century from this region in Ukraine and settled in Saskatchewan where there remains a large Ukrainian population to this day. As far as I know my extended family are the only Chobaniuk’s in Canada and the United States, however one branch of the family spells it Chobanik.

There are still Chobaniuk’s living in Ukraine and although I have not established a direct genealogical link yet, I am quite confident they are my distant relatives given the common shared geography of our families histories. For reference this is as far back as I currently know for my personal family lineage, Paul Chobaniuk> Peter Chobaniuk> James Nicholas Chobaniuk> Andrew Peter Chobaniuk (me). I believe my name is unique and I am the only Andrew Chobaniuk on earth.
